The marketing department within investment banks is also be responsible for supporting the bank’s efforts to recruit new hires. These activities include producing recruitment brochures and website content geared toward MBA and university students interested in pursuing a career in investment banking.
In addition to these activities, the marketing staff at an investment bank will assist the client service teams on an ongoing basis. This can include supporting business development and existing client relationships through client communications and graphics production, maintaining consultant databases, notifying clients of account news and transitions, and assisting with the presentation of global client reporting.
At the most senior level, such as a VP/Marketing or Marketing Director, you would be responsible for developing the overall brand marketing and business development strategies for the firm. You would liaise with managing directors in all departments of the bank and lead a team of marketers to ensure a consistent message and look to marketing materials, from pitch books to annual reports to events.
The marketing department may not be the place to turn to if you’re hoping to break into investment banking as a trader, analyst, or future banker. It’s unlikely you would ever transition from marketing to these front line departments. But if you have a strong interest and background in sales and marketing, investment banking can offer you plenty of challenge and upward mobility in a fast-paced and dynamic business environment.
